Even though I haven't finished playing Dragon Quest II and V yet, I tried to play some of Dragon Quest VI. A bit of it was because I'm both grinding for V and II but another reason was because of curiosity. Dragon Quest VI is often seen as the black sheep of the series, despite having of vocation system which in theory seems like an logical progression for the series. After playing it for sometime(I've got Milly/Muriel in my team), I got some good and some negative things to say about the game thus far. Off course since I'm not finished with this game my opinions can change. I can't really talk about vocations either since I'm not in that part in the game yet.

So I've been playing Dragon Quest(NES versions) of 1 and 4 a lot recently. They are really fun, they remind me a lot of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series because they put a large emphasis in dungeon crawling and preparation. Which is great because I love Mystery Dungeon. Since these elements are so well done, I think these games have more strategy then western gamers give credit for.

I'm half way done though 1, I'm just girding so I can be ready for the pilgrimage to the town that is being blocked by a golem; which is arguably the toughest part of the game. I'm on chapter 5 in DQ 4 and the game is really exciting. I'm at a pretty tough dungeon that has a bunch enemies that uses one hit KO spells. So I manage to trained Cristo to level 34 so he can learn the revive spell.

So I been playing around with team variations and this is what I've came up with so far.

Hero(female): Well obviously because they are the only character that you have direct control over. They barely have any flaws because they can have a wide variety of equipment and magic spells(so many that I lose track of them). Hero had trouble contributing to the team at first because her speed stat was lower than everyone elses. But she caught up due to leveling up so it's less of an issue now.

Alena: She the beast in the team. High Attack, HP, Speed and Luck stat, she hits hard in the first turn especially that she has a high critical hit ratio. Her equipment is limited but that doesn't matter much because is so powerful. She a stable in my team.

Cristo: He ended up a lot useful than I thought(especially during dungeon crawling segments). I had an impression that he would end up being useless because of the twack/defeat meme. However, due to his wide variety of equipment and healing/support spells he found a place on my team. Beat/Defeat spell works on most enemies which is helpful when fighting hordes. There is truth to the twack/defeat meme because he uses beat/defeat quite frequently during boss battles(despite of their immunity) until someone get's hurt or if I change the AI options. Despite of this, I use him more than Nara because he has better defenses and more utility when it comes to support/healing spells.

Mara, Brey, or Ragnar: During early parts of chapter 5 I used Mara for powerful magic spells but then I started to switch her over to Brey when an area is full of enemies that are immune to her fire spells. However, I started to use Ragnar more often when he caught up with the rest of the team. His level is still slightly lower than Hero, Alena and Cristo, but he able to keep up with my team. Ragnar can sponge up attacks really well because of his high HP and defenses. Another good thing about having him in the party is that I have better control over Cristo's AI since he's the only computer controlled magic user that in my party. The only problem is that he's really slow, so sometimes Hero, Alena, and Cristo will already defeat all the enemies before Ragnar has a chance to attack.

Anyways that my team so far. Things might change but this set up is working really well for me.

A new generation of Pokemon games is just on the horizon as Pokemon Sun and Moon have been officially announced. This game implies that the 6th generation is coming to an end soon, as the Pokemon twitter account states that this is going to be a new era of Pokemon. If this is true, this suggests that the 6th generation of Pokemon is ending sooner than most of the generations. Although there's no official reason why 6th gen is ending so soon (I doubt we're going to have an explanation), Pokemon's 6th gen wasn't as successful as its predecessors. Pokemon X & Y are currently the lowest selling mainline games in the franchise. Also, Pokemon X & Y's anime ratings are at an all time low, and fans generally have mixed feelings on the games (myself included). Despite X&Y's shortcomings, I think GameFreak can learn some from these shortcomings to make Pokemon Sun & Moon an improvement over X & Y. So I`m going to discuss what Pokemon X & Y did wrong and how GameFreak can learn from it.

I'm thinking of making fan made figurines by taking a base of a pre-existing figurine and editing it into a new character. I have several ideas in mind but I think I should start simple. What I have in mind is taking a Astro Boy Moderno and editing it into a Jetter Mars Moderno. I'm trying to find out what material would be good for this project but I haven't found anything yet...

A bunch of guys came over to our house to fix the windows and because of this, the house smells like paint. The smell makes it difficult for me to breathe(I'm actually struggling to breath right now). So I'm stuck in my room until the smell leaves but at least this gives me the time to work on my Christmas fic.

Me and my sister watched this obscure Japanese only Transformers anime, Transformers Go!, last night. Transformers Go! was made rather recently(in 2013) and was released direct to DVD. It was made to market a toyline in Japan and the series takes place after the Beast Hunter's "subline imprint" of the second part of the Transformers Prime series. We were able to watch the series in one siting because it was very short.

Despite this, you really don't need to see the Transformers Prime to understand the series. Optimus Prime (he's actually called Optimus Prime instead of Convoy) is the only character in the series that appears in previous incarnations and the story itself is pretty self contained. The show's premise is about how the Predacons want to find the Legendary Disks so they can rule the world. These Legendary Disks are located in Japan, hidden in different time periods. So it's up to two boys, Isumi and Tobio to lead a team of three autobots (Isumi leads to Samurai team while Tobio leads the Shinnobi team) to find these disks before the Predacons. The disks that the boys find are usually owned by important historical figures in Japanese history and they usually they give them the disks when the boys prove that they are worthy to own it.

The series is actually similar to the mainline Pokemon games, as it's divided into 2 sub-series, Transformers Go! Samurai and Transfromers Go! Shinobi. Like the titles of this sub-series subject, the big difference between the two versions is that the plot of each series centers around either one of the two teams. The historical figures that they meet differ too, Isumi meets influential samurai and swordsmen (such as Miyamoto Musashi and Tsukaha Bokuden. Tobio, on the other hand, meets ninjas that also have historical importance, like Kotaro Fuma (he also meets Sasuke Sarutobi, who's a fictional ninja that was popular during the Meiji period). These historical figures give the boys life lessons that helps the Transformers during the last battle.

Aside from that the two versions of the team, they are almost the same, which makes the series feel very repetitive. Sure, the lessons they learn differ from historical figure to historical figure, but the episodes still follow the same formula. Isumi, or Tobio, and their autobots get zapped back into the past, they meet a historical figure, they or the historical figure learn a lession, a Predacon attacks, they fight back. The Historical figure gives them a disk, then when they come back to the present, the disk disappears. Granted this formula applies more to the Samurai version just because it has more episodes than the Shinobi one (Samurai has 6 episodes while Shinobi only has four). The last episode of each is nearly identical, so it really doesn't matter if you watch the last episode of the Shinobi version or the Samurai version.

As you can guess from what I said about the series so far, the series was very much influenced by what's popular with kids in Japan. Transformers isn't nearly as popular in Japan as it is in the West. Therefore, there are notable changes made so that it will be more appealing to a Japanese audience. The series takes a lot of cues from popular tokusatsu series such as Kamen Rider. Most battles are not won individually but through the Autobots combining into one being. Similar to a lot of popular Giant Robot series, like Gundam and Macross, this series focuses on the humans more than the Robots. Unlike those series, the robots are still sentient beings but they have little personality. Their motivation mostly revolves around them protecting Isumi or Tobio. If anything, the series is focused more on Isumi and Tobio's growth.

As for Isumi and Tobio's characterization, they are both typical shounen hero archetypes, and in a lot of ways they are very similar. So similar, that they speak the exact same lines in scenes that are in both versions. Isumi is more level headed than Tobio, but they're not that much different from each other.

The portrayal of Optimus Prime is a Prime example (pun intended) of this series attempts to appeal to a Japanese audience. In Transformers Go!, Optimus Prime doesn't turn into a tuck, he transforms into a bullet train. The scene when he arrives to save Isumi and Co. is hilarious and over the top. Optimus shoots down as a meteor in space (I guess he takes his job as mascot for the Goddard NASA spinoff awards too seriously), then he turns into a Rayquaza like dragon. When he arrives on earth, he transforms into a Bullet Train, and travels on a set of rails in the sky, Galaxy Express 999 style. It has to be seen to believe.

Overall the series is everything that you expect it to be. It's riddled with shounen cliches, the story is rushed and it's pretty repetitive. However, it's faults can make watching the series pretty amusing at the same time. Also, this series does have educational value as well. In the end, it's a pretty silly series but it's kind of fun because of it.

So I posted another drawing on DA. I kind of happy that I'm getting better at drawing Murky but disappointed that my DA gallery doesn't have much variety. I have a couple of drawings of other characters that aren't Murky and Lurky, but I never get invested enough to complete them. I guess my interest became narrower and narrower as time progresses. Pokemon's new direction and the current state Tezuka fandom make me feel less motivated to draw Pokemon or Jetter Mars related stuff. It doesn't help that I'm not terribly interested in the other Rainbow Brite characters so I end up drawing or writing fics that centers around Murky and Lurky. Maybe I should draw some Leiji verse characters but their designs are so intimidating...

Anyways, I'm going to start volunteering at the mesume again. I think it's a good idea because it would help me feel more accomplish with myself. Although I'm working on personal projects, I do like working on something that involves a peer group. It might take until next fall(or the upcoming summer) for me to return to school since it's going to take a while for me to get the treatment I need. So I might as well work on something that's going to help out my resume. Also there's a tasty fried chicken place that is just around the corner, so I look forward to visiting it after work.

I've felt pretty sick recently. Whenever I eat a lot, my chest feels sore. Then hours afterwards, my neck has this strange feeling like I want to vomit. It might be because I haven't eaten regularly for awhile so my body isn't used to digesting so much food any more. I don't know.

On the brighter side, Pokemon Red/Blue and Yellow are being released on the Nintendo 3DS virtual console for next year. Although I already have multiple versions of this game, I can't help but feel excited for it. I also love the fact that they've found a way to trade through the wireless connection because I lost my link cable years ago. I wonder if Mew or the Missingno glitch is still in the game. Hmmm...

This is probably Nintendo/Game Freak's attempt to get people interested in the Pokemon series again, especially since Pokemon X and Y didn't do as well as people hoped. But I think this is better than their previous attempts because unlike Pokemon Origins, this is a port of the original game, not new content trying to pull at our nostalgic heartstrings by making constant references to the old games and trying to market the new games at the same time (it feels cheap whenever they do that). Anyways I'm glad that they are finally releasing it on Virtual Console. It's strange that they waited so long to do it, although I think it's because they couldn't make the trade function work on the DS, which is an important part of the game. Hopefully they will release Pokemon Stadium on Wii U virtual console and find a way to make it compatible with the 3DS version.

According to the Rainbow Brite annual, people do know when Murky's birthday is but because he's so mean to everyone, so they keep his birth date a secret from him. That's why Murky thinks he doesn't have birthday....

That's just incredibly sad; I mean, not going to someone's party because you don't like them is one thing, but having a large group of people not tell someone when their birthday is to the point that they don't think they have one in the first place is downright cruel.

It does further prove the theory of Murky being a outcast though. I also have a feeling that Lurky doesn't know either because it would be pretty out of character for him to do that. As over critical as his mom is, I don't think she would do that either (of course this was published years before episode 7 came out)

The Rainbow Brite doll that's going to be released in August isn't going to follow the look of the 1980's doll as most fans hoped. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the design they are probably going to use is really ugly.

This is the design that Halmark showed in April:

and this is what will probably be the final product (although it says the designs aren't finalized):

At least the Starlite and Twink plushies didn't undergo a radical change for the worse.

The good news is that this new toy revival is giving more attention to Murky and Lurky than the past post-1980's gens. Mostly it's because the Rainbow Brite Facebook page is making jokes about Murky and Lurky in regard to the new toyline. The Rainbow Brite's Facebook account wrote this: http://i.imgur.com/q2OBvUH.png

Oh please let there be Murky and Lurky merchandise. Aside from the dolls that where released in 1980s', Murky and Lurky merch are hard to come by nowadays. Of course, Halmark could be making a reference to their joke about how Murky tried to prevent the Red Butler, Indigo, Romeo and Hammy itty bittys from reaching Halmark stores, but I really hope that this post is hinting at something bigger than a little Facebook joke.

Pets

tetsuro_hoshino999: (It's me)
Recently, I've been wanting to look after a pet. Growing up, my family had several pets; but since I'm older, I would like to take care of a pet again. I would like to own a pet that's interactive but not super high maintenance. I would like to have some kind of small or medium sized parrot because I'm familiar with taking care of them, but the issue is that they tend to not be very apartment friendly.

Then I looked into Fancy Rats (aka domesticated rats) and they sound like a cool pet. They bound well with their owners and aside from buying a cage (that is spacious and has lots of toys) and vet bills, they aren't too expensive in comparison to other pets. They seem to be the kind of pet that I'm looking for because their maintenance level seems more middle ground(more interactive than fish and hamsters but less demanding than dogs and cats).Although I don't think it's safe to say they are low maintenance pets because they need a lot of stimulation/attention (Which is the main reason why that most people buy at least two rats) and they need a specific kind of bedding. Also, sadly they often have short lives.

I'm not sure if my apartment would accept them although I heard that they are actually pretty clean pets and they are quiet, too. Since rats are stigmatized, they may not allow it. It's also probably a good idea to not take them outside, since there are a lot of hawks in the area. My family home does seem like a good home for them, but I spend a lot time at the apartment (for school and other things). I also don't really trust my mom with taking care of pets when I'm gone. She's not really an animal lover as she has a tendency to give away pets or put away in pets the basement. I would like to interact with them in a regular basis anyways.

I know my mom wants to move in with her new husband (I'm still not used to calling him my step dad) in the future and maybe me and my sisters can have the family home to ourselves. But I don't know when that would be and I kind of wanted to move to another city one day because there's no jobs over here. My sister wants a dog so if I do get a rat, I got to make sure that the dog doesn't hurt it.

I'm not completely dead set on getting one, I've got to do more research and save money for a large cage and find a vet that knows how to take care of them, but they seem like a fun pet to have. I'm a big bird fan and I would love to own another bird one day but trying to raise someone else would be neat too. I've already raised fish before but I would like to raise an animal that's more willing to bond with their owners. If I get them, I'll probably need to get two of them which is okay with me.

Tfcon itself was great. The staff were really nice and professional. However, I'm still tried from yesterday.

I was just thinking about how Lurky looks up to Murky in some ways. There's parts in the show when Lurky would copy his body language. I like the idea that he looks up to Murky, because Lurky thinks that Murky copes with being an outcast better. While Lurky is shown to want being accepted by the Sprites, (like when he wanted to be invited to their picnics), Murky seems like he's not interested in being accepted by his native society. He doesn't really show homesickness towards his homeland (granted, it's been hundreds of years) but he doesn't seem to be interested in introducing their culture to the Pits or Rainbowland. Lurky admires Murky for it because to him, not caring about being accepted is less painful than wanting to be accepted but failing.

Although Murky seems like he doesn't care about being an outcast in his homeland, I would like to think that he secretly does. He copes through avoidance, so he doesn't talk about his homeland and his life before he moved to The Pits. Despite the fact that they lived together for hundreds of years, Lurky doesn't know that because they've never brought it up, especially since Murky isn't open to talk about it.

Luckily, there were no complications during the surgery. I woke up when they were still doing their finishing touches so I was worried that they would have to give me more anesthesia. However, even when I was awake, I didn't feel anything and they were finished with the surgery soon after. I guess one of the reasons why I was afraid that it wouldn't work because I fell asleep so fast and I didn't have any sort of dreams. Also blood was coming out of my mouth on the way back but that was taken care off rather quickly.

So now I'm just resting. I took a nap after eating my lunch but I'm pretty awake now. I can also talk rather clearly now. I pretty much spent the day playing video games and watching TV shows(episodes of Mst3k, Jetter Mars, and Rainbow Brite). I'm going to write my fanfiction again; probably tomorrow but now I'm just relaxing.
tetsuro_hoshino999: (Default)
Feel free to check it out. It's available on AO3 and Fanfiction.net. One of the reasons I wrote this fic to see if Lurky could hold up a story on his own because I plan to write an origin story for Lurky in the near future. I did retain his clumsiness, since it wouldn't make sense for him to feel insecure for being clumsy if he wasn't clumsy in the first place. At the same time I strayed away from making Lurky's character a collection of "look he's stupid" jokes. I think I got used to writing him, and I'm already starting to write my origin story. I might take a break if I feel too weak after my wisdom teeth removal.

It's over

My mom is leaving the family house so she can marry her boyfriend at Vegas. So me and my sister are going to be house siting for the week. She left some money to help to help pay for food. There's not much to do at my home town though but I'm trying to make the best of it. I'm going to tackle my driving related anxieties by driving alone. Trying to practice here is a good idea because it's a small town.

On Father's Day, I visited my father's grave. The grave looks a little bit bare so I kind of want to get more flowers for it.

I'm have a writers block right now. I haven't been in the mood to write my story recently. I'm half way done but I'm still intimidated to finish it. But when it's comes to video making, I'm on a roll. I think a made about four new videos within a week. That's a new record for me.
