Re-model figures

I'm thinking of making fan made figurines by taking a base of a pre-existing figurine and editing it into a new character. I have several ideas in mind but I think I should start simple. What I have in mind is taking a Astro Boy Moderno and editing it into a Jetter Mars Moderno. I'm trying to find out what material would be good for this project but I haven't found anything yet...
